Often, investment professionals tend to focus on the quantitative aspects of selecting external managers. However, a very important part of the manager research process heavily relies on qualitative factors, such as personnel and team, firm culture, and alignment of incentives. Join Keith Black, PhD, CFA, CAIA, FDP, Joanne Murphy and Jack Wu, CFA as they discuss the results of a recent survey conducted by CAIA Association to better understand the qualitative factors of importance to LPs and GPs during the manager research process.

Jo Murphy
Managing Director, Asia Pacific, Industry Relations @CAIA Association
Jo has been based in Asia, predominately in Hong Kong, for over 20 years. During her tenure she has held a number of senior management positions, leading sales, business development, marketing, and CRM divisions and has both built and managed large and effective regionally-located teams. After moving to Hong Kong with Morgan Stanley, Jo also worked for both HSBC and Deutsche Bank covering intermediary, buy and sell side roles and held an entrepreneurial position at Triple A Partners. She now focuses on the education environment. All these roles have had a consistent focus on the Alternative Investment industry. Jo enjoys the reputation of being capable, committed, and commercial, was voted “Asia’s most influential woman in AI” and one of “The 25 most influential people in Asian hedge funds.” She is a founding member of Hong Kong’s AIMA Chapter, holds a number of Board positions, and is a Fellow of UniSIM University.
Keith Black, PhD, CFA, CAIA, FDP
Managing Director, Content Strategy @CAIA Association
Keith Black has over thirty years of financial market experience, serving approximately half of that time as an academic and half as a trader and consultant to institutional investors. He currently serves as Managing Director of Content Strategy for the CAIA Association. During his most recent role at Ennis Knupp + Associates, Keith advised foundations, endowments and pension funds on their asset allocation and manager selection strategies in hedge funds, commodities, and managed futures. Prior experience includes commodities derivatives trading, stock options research and CBOE floor trading, and building quantitative stock selection models for mutual funds and hedge funds. Dr. Black previously served as an assistant professor and senior lecturer at the Illinois Institute of Technology. Dr. Black earned a BA from Whittier College, an MBA from Carnegie Mellon University, and a PhD from the Illinois Institute of Technology.
Jack Wu, CFA
Director, Content APAC @CAIA Association
Jack Wu serves as Director of Content, Asia Pacific at CAIA, where he supports the research, curation and development of knowledge in the alternative investment space. He is also responsible for executing the organisation’s content strategy and CAIA Charter Program curriculum. Prior to his role at CAIA Association, Jack served as an investment professional at fund manager - Credit Suisse and SC Capital Partners - focusing on Real Estate asset class where he completed over $800 million of direct investments across Asia Pacific markets, and across real estate types. He has also worked at financial institution as an industry specialist focusing on power, oil & gas and real estate, and at sovereign wealth fund where he completed manager investments and direct investments in both private equity and real estate space. Jack earned a 1st class hons in Bachelor of Engineering (Computer Engineering). He also holds the Charted Financial Analyst (CFA) designation.
