CAIA's Focus on Africa: Investing in African Art
African Art has been one of the developing segments at auctions over the past 15 years. From a historic focus on traditional African art, the interest over the past few years has shifted to modern and contemporary African art. Launched in London in 2013 as a satellite event to the major Frieze London art fair, the art fair 1‐54, focusing on Contemporary African art, is now a fully independent art fair with multiple occurrences in London, New York, Marrakech, and Paris. The growing interest in African art has led the auction house Sotheby’s to launch a new auction series in 2017, focusing on Modern and Contemporary African Art and arranged twice a year in London. In 2020, Christie’s partnered with 1‐54 to provide further viewing opportunities for African art in their London office. A similar version of the same event was recently arranged at the Christie’s office in Paris in January 2021. With all the recent interest in African art, is now the time to invest? If so, where should interested collectors start? What is the best way to gain an understanding of the African art market? Where do collectors buy and sell? What are the upside and risks of investing in African art?

CAIA Association is delighted to invite you to this webinar focusing on African Art. Serge Tiroche, interviewed by Christine Bourron, will share insights from his experience building a private collection, focused on contemporary art from across Africa and the diaspora.
